Culburra's Tyler Wright creates history becoming the
youngest ever surfer to win an ASP World Tour event

Australia’s Tyler Wright from Culburra created history today becoming the youngest ever surfer to win an ASP World Tour event. At just 14 years of age Wright won the Beachley Classic, Women’s surfing richest event with $US100 000 in prize money – Wright defeated Brazilian Silvanna Lima in the final.

Along the way to the final Wright defeated, current ASP world champion Stephanie Gilmore, Brazil’s Jaqueline Silva, Amee Donohoe (AUS) and Silvanna Lima in the final.

The young natural-footer has been on a tear lately, qualifying for the prestigious Billabong ASP World Junior Championships last week before going on her giant-slaying here in Manly this week.

“It’s been an amazing two weeks,” Wright said. “I think I am just going to go home to Culburra and chill out and let it all sink in next."

Friday 10 October: Tyler Wright from Culburra is through to round three of the Beachley Classic after defeating current ASP World Champion in the opening round of the Beachley classic today! This opening round forced Gilmore into the round two losers round while Wright advanced straight to round three. Gilmore later won her cut throat round two heat and will now face Wright again in round three.

The Beachley Classic is stop number 5 on the ASP Women’s World Tour and includes the world’s top 17 surfers along with one wild card from the Oakley Trials. Defending champion is Stephanie Gilmore (AUS). Gilmore is also the current ASP World Champion and ratings leader for 2008 just ahead of Sofia Mulanovich (Peru).

The Beachley is also the World’s richest Women’s Pro Surfing event with $US100 000 in prizemoney.

Culburra's Tyler Wright at Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship

Culburra's Tyler Wright netted a silver medal in the under 18 girls division at the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in France today, finishing behind Narrabeen surfer Laura Enever. Wright accrued a 13.56 total to Enever's 13.76.

Australia wins ISA Junior Team World Championship for third consecutive year

The Australian surfing team has won the most prestigious tournament on the planet for surfers under the age of 18, the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship, for the third consecutive time. This historic deed was achieved in the perfect waves of Le Penon beach. They provided the best conditions of the entire event, with large and perfect four to six foot faces.

Today four rounds of the repercharge and one of the main event in each division were held to determine surfers for the grand finals. The gold in the Under 18 Boys was won by the Brazilian, Alejo Muniz, in the Under 16 Boys by Tamaroa McComb of Tahiti, and in the Girls’, by Laura Enever of Australia, all of whom were crowned ISA World Junior Champions.
