Commonwealth Government Education Portal DPMS and Website Utility
The Document Publishing Management System (DPMS) is a place where you can store your group's documents that have been created for education purposes and have them accessible at any time, from any computer, anywhere in the world by simply logging on with your group's username and password. You also have the option of making these documents public if you want to share a resource you have developed. The other tool available to groups is the Website Wizard which allows a group to develop a 10 page website using templates provided in the program. Once your group has built its website, the URL can be added to the group's Community Directory listing to provide another way that people can find out about the group and its field of interest. Values Education Study - Update
The study will consider values in education practice in Australia, review Australian and overseas research and work with parents, teachers and students to determine how values can best be fostered in schools. Schools across Australia will be invited to participate in action research to demonstrate and develop what they are doing in values education. Schools involved in the study may apply for grants of up to $7,000. Funding will be available for at least 60 action research case studies across the country.

Indigenous Education Review
The Australian Education Union recognises that there is ample research which signifies our failure as a nation to provide teachers with the professional skills and knowledge required to work effectively with Indigenous peoples. Further, lack of access to this sort of pre-service training has contributed to the low level of learning outcomes achieved by Indigenous students. It believes that all teachers employed in the public education system in Australia should complete a comprehensive sequence of Indigenous studies as a minimum requirement for their employment.

The Changing Faces of Virtual Education
Released last week, this report from the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) is a follow-up to their 1999 study. Conditions for Classroom Technology Innovations
This research identifies school site conditions that influence successful integration of technology with classroom instruction. The primary purpose of the study was to address 'why don't teachers innovate when they are given computers?' and 'why don't teachers integrate computers in their teaching in more meaningful ways?' The evaluation is of a grant program, where 118 K-12 teachers in Michigan were awarded funds to innovate with technology in their classrooms.

Playing out the Realities of Web-Based Bulletin Boards - Enhancing Face to Face Learning

This article by Kathleen P. King of Fordham University in New York is based on a study of 109 students which looks at the use of web-based bulletin boards in learning. The paper describes the technology used and presents student reflections on the experience, as well as recommendations for use in education instruction. The article is from New Horizons in Adult Education, Spring 2001.
Project Atmosphere Australia Online 2002
Students record, forecast, and measure elements of the weather as well as collect weather folklore and write about the impact of weather on the lives and livelihoods of members of their community. There are also other activities and email lists, and students may even publish on the web. A new round of activities starts on March 4, for 4 weeks.
Project Pillars - Foundations for Success in Online Curriculum Projects
Project pillars is a research paper written by Jane Carr, Education Officer Special Duties (Research), with the Research Innovation and Access section of AccessEd, Education Queensland. The subject of the research project was EdNA's Netdays Australia 2000, a telecommunications curriculum project that enabled students to collaboratively explore cultural diversity by connecting with different communities of people.
Quandary
Quandary is an application for creating Web-based Action Mazes. In an Action Maze the user is presented with a situation, and a number of choices as to a course of action to deal with it. On choosing one of the options, the resulting situation is then presented, again with a set of options. Working through this branching tree is like negotiating a maze, hence the name. Action Maze is shareware, and a limited version of the program is available free. The site also contains examples of action mazes.

The Adam Spencer/University of Sydney Eureka Schools Prize for Lateral Thinking is sponsored by media personality Adam Spencer and the University of Sydney through its School of Physics. The Prize is designed to challenge young minds in lateral thinking by asking them to answer a number of logic/problem-solving questions as well as to outline their imaginative solution to a social/economic problem facing Australia. National Kilowatt Count will become an annual activity in August and it is envisaged that it will grow over time to become a high profile event.
National Learning Quest Challenge
The National Learning Quest Challenge, is a learning challenge open to Australian school teachers and students (primary and secondary) from all school sectors. To participate, teachers and students develop a web page and learning activities which guides learners through tasks that engage, challenge and support them. The activities are based on Learning Quest formats designed to develop strategies for effectively using the Internet in the classroom and provide unique learning opportunities for students. The National Learning Quest Challenge is being launched at the ICTEV conference in Melbourne on the 4 May 2002 and the Quest is open for participation between 5 May 2002 and 27 September 2002.
