Recycling

Background

Recycling used computers is one of the many activities of the Sussex Inlet Computer Club.
When we started the Club in 1995, we had a rule that we would not be involved with 'Pirate' software, but we exchanged 'Freeware' and 'Shareware'. From there it developed into exchanging and recycling mouses, keyboards, printers and scanners.
One of our members became interested in rejuvenating old equipment and by 2003 he had commenced upgrading old computers and accessories and providing them free to disadvantaged people and seniors.
Other members of the Club decided that they would also like to learn about the inside of a computer and its working. So several members commenced meeting one afternoon a week, and enjoyed pulling the old computers apart, studying how the many pieces combined and then rejuvenating the unit.
Since this service commenced we have provided over 100 computers to the local community.

The Process

Following is a brief overview of the rejuvenation process we follow:

Privacy
To rejuvenate a used computer we firstly remove all of the previous owner’s personal information.

Quality
We then install modern parts, where possible, and updated or install a modern operating system. It is then considered reconditioned and ready to start a new working life.

Recycle
If we received equipment that is beyond redemption we:
1. Remove any parts that can be used to upgrade another unit.
2. Deliver the remains to an electronics recycling business.
Originally we provided the remains to a Nowra recycling business, which shredded them and disposed of the shredded material to organisations who recast them into new products. Over the years community recycling has grown in strength and the Shoalhaven City Council now provides an electronic recycling service, which we support.

Operating System
Currently all computers that we supply are loaded with Linux Mint. This system is similar to the Android system used in many tablets and mobile phones. Android and Mint are both derived from Linux. For more information follow this link.

Systems available
Usually the Club has a number of refurbished desktop or laptop computers available. Specifications vary, but machines can be configured to suit different age groups and uses ranging from connecting to the internet, playing music or movies, storing photos or playing basic games.

To use this service
If you or someone you know would like to take advantage of this service, please contact us on (02) 4441 0131 (Tom) and we will endeavour to help.
We can often deliver the unit to the home and may also be able to provide some training.
If you have never operated a computer and would like to test one to see how they work, in your own home, we can do that too.
We also have available used monitors (in a range of sizes and configurations), keyboards and sundry cables and accessories.

Donations
We are happy to provide these computers free of charge to anyone who under current circumstances is not be able to buy their own.
For other recipients, if possible, we would appreciate a small donation to help cover the cost of new batteries, memory and accessories. Any excess funds accrued during the year are donated to the Computer Club's nominated charities.
